Seafarers work on contracts of 4–6 months at sea, followed by 2–4 months of paid leave. This means significant family time when compared to traditional 5-day office jobs.
Ships provide comfortable single cabins with attached bathrooms, TV, WiFi (on modern vessels), and full-board meals. All expenses are covered by the shipping company.
Modern ships have satellite internet (VSAT), though bandwidth may be limited on some vessels. On-board libraries, gym, recreation room, and movie collections are standard.
Officers typically work 4-hours on, 8-hours off watch system (e.g., 4AM–8AM, 4PM–8PM). This becomes natural with adjustment and ensures adequate rest.
Regular fire drills, abandon-ship drills, and safety training keep everyone prepared. Ships follow strict SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.
